Mason was born October 27, 2010. At 9 days old Mason contracted bacterial meningitis. After several rounds of antibiotics his scans showed the infection had cleared. We had been home with him for 17 days when the meningitis recurred. The infection caused lesions on his brain that were full of infection, which led him to eventually being reinfected. During the 2nd round of his lengthy hospital stay he had the lesions drained, an external shunt placed and loads of antibiotics. Before we were released the drain was internalized and he now has 2 bilateral vp shunts draining his spinal fluid. The brain injury has left him with cerebral palsy, epilepsy, cortical blindness, hydrocephalus, self-injurious behaviors, neuro irritability, and global developmental disorder. Mason is also nonverbal and wheelchair bound.
It’s been a long haul for Mason, but he’s one tough kiddo. He loves going for long walks in his stroller, listening to music or his favorite cartoon, napping, playing catch, swimming and he really likes being at school. He’s involved in the Miracle League and loves playing baseball, mostly the cheering and running the bases when someone is pushing him super-fast. He has the mostly amazing laugh when he’s having fun!
With Mason it’s been a challenge to find activities he enjoys; most are very short lived or not tolerated at all. When he’s not enjoying himself he will end up self-injuring by hitting himself, banging his head or throwing himself back. We have made a wish for a swimming pool for Mason, he absolutely loves the water and will float, kick his legs and play for hours. We are thrilled to have something like this at our home since he’s getting bigger and lifting him is getting more difficult. The pool is somewhere him and his twin brother can enjoy the same activity and will be awesome for our entire family!
