Layna was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when she was 10 days old. This is a chronic illness that affects the lungs and digestion. I felt very overwhelmed when our team at the U of I told us we we were elgible for a wish, and it first made me very sad... as I had pictured terminally ill children. I felt like we were "underserving" because we have been fortunate enough that Layna has stayed very healthy. But our social worker explained the program is for all those kiddos who have to work a bit harder to stay healthy. And it is true! She has to do a lot more than a 'normal' 5 year old!
Layna LOVES the beach and the ocean. She cannot swim in most lakes or rivers and hottubs - which is tough as we are water people. These bodies of water are dangerous because of their risk of bacteria which can give her a lung infection. The ocean, however is PERFECT for CF'ers. So Hawaii was a literal dream. Our whole family could not believe this was an option.
The whole experience was incredible - truly magical and our little girl was so so happy. She has been talking about it ever since returning. It was so nice to relax and enjoy the beautiful setting as a family.
Supporting Make-A-Wish Iowa matters because these kids go through a lot and handle it with such grace. What an amazing way to reward their efforts!
